The aim of this experiment is to develop a more environmentally friendly concrete mix design and minimize the pollution caused by concrete manufacture. As a result, I lowered the cement ratio by replacing volcanic ash and lime powder with cement. I also used Olivine, a naturally mineral that absorbs CO2 from water and lowers its acidity.

Laboratory Tests

This experiment began with creating a control sample and then replacing or adding a new admixture. Finally, several laboratory tests, such as comparative strength and leaching, were performed to discover the sample that met most of the criteria. In order to test and compare the durability and strength of the mixture, I constructed 11 cylinders to get evaluated using a compressive strength test. Following the sample cured under laboratory conditions and then broke after 7days

Data from literature study:

The data utilized here was connected to the size and shape of surface deformations in coastal infrastructure. The patterns used in the tiles’ surface were inspired by the fossilized patterns of native corals. For example, 1) the Voronoi pattern, modeled after honeycomb coral, and 2) the reaction-diffusion pattern, modeled after brain coral (shown in figure x). These two patterns were decoded using a Grasshopper and then applied to the surface. The method was utilized to convert the plan surface to a rough and bumpy texture, creating a desirable microhabitat for marine life to engage. Moreover, the texture’s size and shape directly impact the type of spices and organisms that will be encouraged.

Promote Biodiversity

After performing a literature review, I discovered that adding texture to the surface can aid in marine creature attachment. Colonization of the concrete surface by animals and plants creates a weather and erosion barrier, enhancing the durability and extending the concrete’s life, known as the Bioprotection process. To demonstrate this concept, I created sample tiles with varying textures using an eco-friendly concrete mix and then set them along the shoreline and tracked their effect on the accumulation of marine flora and animals over time.

Future Testing and Assessment

Following the investigation, six concrete tiles with two distinct surface textures and three different mix designs were deployed at a site near water for a year to evaluate and monitor their efficacy in retaining and increasing biodiversity. The findings will be compared and analyzed with the control tile.
